Our treatment teams consist of highly experienced practitioners from a broad range of professional healthcare backgrounds. All practitioners are fully qualified and/or certified, and are considered outstanding professionals in their respective fields. This is one of the many reasons we are a premier therapeutic service.

Our therapeutic teams are guided by highly experienced clinical consultants who are leaders in treating complex problems. All practitioners are supported and trained to work together in an integrated and coordinated manner. Each therapeutic team follows an integrative care plan conceived by multi-disciplinary practitioners with regular and frequent team briefings.

    International Clinical Program Consultant

    Nick has a deep understanding of this niche healthcare sector and has worked in the field for over twenty years. His initial motivation stemmed from exposure to family health issues and his own associated personal health challenges. Nick has worked from the ground up in the industry and has gained an appreciation of the multiple aspects of integrated teamwork that are required to achieve sustainable quality client outcomes. He has consulted for multiple international sites in the implementation of intricate behavioural healthcare operations. This has included establishing triage and intake systems, policies, procedures, guidelines and documentation protocols while adhering to compliance and regulatory needs. He established and operated a 60 bed addiction recovery facility in Southern California and a large behavioural health centre in Costa Rica. He has held multiple senior management positions.

    Nick continues to maintain certification as a licensed addiction counsellor and certified clinical supervisor. His desire to help people become free from the grips of addictive disorders and crippling mental health problems has become a passion and the driving force in his life.

    Nick is of Swiss/Italian descent and has a deep appreciation for family. In his free time he enjoys travel and collecting vintage cars.

  • Dr Gerrit Prinsloo

    Director of Medical Services

    Dr. Prinsloo started his medical career 21 years ago as an Emergency Physician working in Africa, Europe and America. Moving to Canada in 2011 he transformed into a full-service rural family physician flying himself by helicopter to underserved communities and providing essential primary care.

    He obtained Addiction Medicine Board Certification in 2016 and took on the role of Staff Addiction Physician at St Paul’s hospital in Vancouver. As part of Gerrit’s well-rounded expertise he also has subspecialty certification in Regenerative and Functional Medicine. His medical research focussed on the key role hormones play in the suffering experienced due to a variety of clinical presentations.

    Gerrit is happily married with a young family. He is a keen surfer, cook and a commercially qualified helicopter pilot.

  • Dr Carlos Nuñez

    Director of Psychiatric Services
    MD, FRCPC, DABPN

    Dr. Carlos Nuñez is a US trained Psychiatrist. He has extensive clinical experience with over a decade of expertise dealing with complex clients and cases. He attended medical school at the University of Arizona College of Medicine and completed residency training in General Psychiatry at the University of Illinois. Following this he completed an additional year of training in psychodynamic psychotherapy at the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute.

    Carlos relocated to Vancouver in 2012 and has maintained positions at St. Paul’s Hospital and as a Clinical Instructor for The University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine. He has provided outpatient addictions treatment in Vancouver and conducted clinical research with The British Columbia Centre on Substance Use (BCCSU). Dr. Nuñez has additional expertise in the field of occupational psychiatry and service development. He has been on a number of review committees and regularly provides expert opinion to international industry and government.

  • Dr Shahar Rabi

    Dr Shahar Rabi applies an evidence based approach to lead an exceptional truly integrative team.

    His therapeutic strategies provide a healing space for clients to explore the feelings, thoughts, behaviours and relationships that cause difficulties in their lives. His academic research has been focused on mindfulness and body-centered interventions as means for wellbeing, connection, and growth.

    Shahar is an Adjunct Professor in Counselling Psychology at Alder University. He has a diversity of experience which has equipped him with a broad understanding of the challenges of the human condition. He has been a choreographer, yoga instructor, and philosophy teacher. He also spent years of study and practice in meditation in monasteries in India, Nepal and Thailand.

    Allen is a seasoned professional with over five decades of clinical experience. He received his doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of California. He has an international reputation as a very insightful, engaging, and masterful psychotherapist. He specializes in Gestalt Experiential Psychotherapy and in the 1970’s was mentored by two brilliant psychiatrists, Dr William Rader and Dr Walter Kempler.

    In addition to authoring five books on recovery from alcoholism and other addictions, Allen has produced a series of audio and video programs on emotional sobriety and relationship matters. He continues to mentor and train other experts in the field.

    Dr Mason was born and raised on Vancouver Island on the traditional territory of the Coast Salish people of the Snuneymuxw First Nation.

    He completed medical school at the University of Calgary followed by training in Family Medicine with a focus on Indigenous Health from the University of British Columbia. Certified with the Canadian Society of Addiction Medicine, Dr. Mason works in a variety of settings integrating primary and substance use care as an award winning physician, administrator and clinical instructor.

    Randal is renowned for his advocacy work in harm reduction and equity focused healthcare delivery. He believes each person’s wellness journey is unique, applying a strength-based approach to recovery and optimizing health. His practice is focused on applying the latest evidence-based medicine in a practical, patient-centered manner with an emphasis on continual quality improvement.

    When not at work, Randal can be found exploring the wilderness of Vancouver Island, hiking, trail running and surfing with his wife and three children.

  • Dr Monika Brandstaetter

    Born and raised in Austria, Monika completed a Master of Arts in Lifespan Developmental Psychology at UVIC, and completed training in clinical psychology and cognitive behavioural therapy in Salzburg and Munich..

    Monika specialises in Depression, Anxiety, Self-esteem, Trauma, including attachment trauma and complex PTSD, Dissociation, Meaning and Purpose, Values, Spirituality, Grief and Loss

    She uses a variety of therapy approaches, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, Internal Family Systems and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.

    Her work is informed by nervous system regulation and polyvagal theory, attachment theory, dissociation, and embodiment.

    Katelynn is responsible for training and scheduling all of our nursing staff. Her background as a nurse in Emergency and Acute Care Medicine has created the skillset required to be a team leader who is highly practical, well organised and adaptable. Katelynn also has invaluable sub-specialty skills and knowledge in the areas of mental health, woman’s health and dermatology.

    Katelynn was born in Ontario, Canada and grew up with a passion for taking care of others and travelling. Once graduating high school she moved to the United Kingdom where she worked as a personal assistant. This enabled her to travel across Europe and Asia for work. She eventually settled down and moved back to Canada landing in central Vancouver Island. Although Katelynn's original post-secondary plans were to complete an accounting degree she ultimately settled on a career path in nursing that would take her outside of the office and allow her to utilize more of her people skills.

    Katelynn’s love for travel continues to shine, she has explored over 20 countries across 3 continents, and when Katelynn isn’t in a different country you can find her in her kitchen with her two cats experimenting with all the cookbooks that she brings home from her travels.

    Tanis has an insatiable curiosity for how we can live our best life. With a focus on lifestyle medicine, she is a somatic movement practitioner and behavioural scientist working in academia, private practice and as a researcher with Lululemon.

    Tanis’ work focuses on comprehensive qualitative research projects to understand our stories and the impact of movement on wellbeing. Her training in exercise physiology, neuroscience and yoga informs her teaching and personal practice through sharing powerful rituals such as breathwork, meditation, running and yoga.

    Tanis is passionate about working with individuals and provides opportunities to develop whole body health as the very core of how we perform, connect, and design our lives. Most importantly, she is a mama, a partner, a sport and outdoor enthusiast and a foodie.

  • Kymberly Nicholson

    Director of Physical Therapies
    RN, Fitness Coach & Personal Trainer

    Kymberly's desire to assist and empower others has been a lifetime passion and the primary focus of her career. Kymberly has been a Registered Nurse for over 25 years. She graduated from nursing school in Victoria BC and has since worked and specialised in many areas of this health profession, including medicine and surgery, forensics, home care and public health. She has a keen interest in mental health and addictions, and also working remotely in First Nations communities.

    As a fitness enthusiast, and with a strong passion for wanting the best health for others, Kymberly has worked over the last 15 years in the field of personal training and group fitness training. She runs marathons, ultra-marathons, and completes gymnasium-based strength training. She enjoys the benefits of yoga, meditation and breathwork to achieve balanced wellbeing, and is currently completing Trauma Informed Yoga training.

    Kymberly has additional qualifications in Reiki and is a Registered Clinical Hypnotherapist. Her broad experience and skill base makes her perfectly suited to oversee the physical therapy aspects of our programs.

    Jessica has a keen interest in health and preventative care. Her initial European training including 6 years of education in fitness theory, group cycling, personal training and nutrition. In 2004 she graduated with honours in registered massage and spa therapy.

    Jessica has an extensive background in sports therapy and she uses her knowledge and experience to incorporate a variety of techniques to enhance relaxation and therapeutic results. As part of a fascinating career she has worked with Tour de France, Giro d'Italia and Vuelta Espana professional cycling athletes in Europe; Ironman tri-athlete participants and AWT/PWT windsurfers in Hawaii; Big Mountain Freestyle skiers in Whistler; Canadian athletes for the Olympics of Beijing and Athens. She has teacher training certification with the International Massage Association and has taught massage in Nicaragua. Jessica has also been a participant at the World Championships of Massage in Denmark.

    Jessica tailors treatment specifically for each client and empowers them to reach their optimal physical and mental health.

    Joëlle was born and raised on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. Her background in anthropology led her to delve deeply into culinary traditions and flavours from around the globe. Cooking has become a language for her to explore and understand the world, and to communicate stories of her own.

    Drawing from techniques old and new and using the best quality ingredients available, she creates vibrant dishes that appeal to all the senses.

    Joëlle is a dedicated personal chef and private cooking instructor. She loves introducing clients to new taste sensations and preparing meals that nourish the spirit as well as the body. She has a passionate desire to help more people experience food at its full potential: food as nourishment and healing, food as a doorway to discovering the breadth of human diversity and ingenuity, and finally, food as an act of community and love.

    Marnie is an Art and Clinical Therapist with 17 years experience in mental health services to individuals of all ages and abilities.

    She provides Art therapy sessions, Therapeutic Body Mapping workshop, psychoanalytic dream work, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for PTSD, grief and loss processing, team building sessions, clinical therapy sessions, relapse prevention, aftercare support, coaching.

    Cindy began her career in the beauty industry as an Esthetician, graduating from the Kelowna School of Esthetics in 1992.

    She has experience working at some of the top resort spas on Vancouver Island where she has gained and strengthened many valuable skills.

    Cindy coordinates a range of spa treatments and pampering for our clients including manicures, pedicures, facials, body treatments, massage, waxing, tinting etc. She provides an unparalleled sensory experience, with the soothing power of human touch.

    Director of Concierge Services

    Michele has a passion for showing off beautiful Victoria BC and supporting local arts, places of contemporary and historical interest and business. She specialises in providing our clients with a Private and Customised Tour experience.

    She provides dedicated concierge services and she has been honoured by Victoria Women in Business with the Community initiative award.

    Michele has 10 years experience of working with people struggling with addictions and is a member of 100 Women Who Care Victoria.

    Dominique provides The Sanctuary Vancouver Island clientele with high class executive & priority cleaning services. Initially trained at The EMPRESS in Victoria BC, Dominque obtained many years of experience delivering services to the exacting standards of the Fairmont Luxury Hotel Group.

    Dominique is highly detailed, industrious and committed to creating an environment commensurate to providing our clients with excellence, consistency and professionalism in white-glove cleaning provision.

    Zack refined his skills with years of service at The Fairmont Empress, Victoria’s landmark hotel. His highly developed knowledge of the Island and the Greater Victoria Area, and his connectivity to services and partner organizations, makes for a seamless process of episode delivery and a smooth client relationship experience.

    Outside work Zack enjoys hiking, tennis and golf. He loves international travel and has lived in Dubai, UAE, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.

    Sarah lives and work on the homelands of the Hul’qumi’num People - the Quw’utsun and Ts’uubaa-asatx Nations. She has been involved in health sciences for over 15 years in areas such as emergency room nursing, community health research, health and wellness education, and mental health counselling.

    Sarah has subspeciality interests in trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and she enjoys the challenge of adapting therapy to fit the individual needs of each client. Sarah ensures that all clients feel nurtured regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, or faith background.

    Dominique is an Erickson International Professional Coach and CCAR-certified Addictions Recovery Coach who has worked with a broad range of high performing businesspeople and individuals struggling with substance abuse and process addiction issues.

    She is also a Trauma Informed Yoga and Meditation Teacher who has taught yoga and mindfulness practices for over a decade at some of Vancouver’s top yoga studios, addiction treatment centres, psychiatric hospitals and the Downtown East side of Vancouver (including First Responders at Vancouver Fire & Rescue Services).

    As a person in long term recovery, she knows first-hand the many challenges that her clients endure, as well as the potential for a joyful, healthy and connected life. Her clients appreciate her open mind, deep curiosity and grounded nature as she encourages them to use their strengths to create their best life.

    Born in Hong Kong to a Swiss father and an English mother, Dominique began her career in the Swiss banking industry and has travelled extensively throughout the world. She speaks three languages (English, French and German) and has lived in Hong Kong, London, Zurich, Montreal and Greenwich, Connecticut.

    An accomplished poet and photographer, Dominique enjoys hiking and exploring the great outdoors of British Columbia with her husband and two children.

    As a Canadian Certified Addiction Counsellor and Clinical Supervisor Steve is well equipped to provide emotional support and encouragement to clients suffering from the symptoms of mental or behavioural disturbances. Steve is a passionate visionary and has had over thirty years experience of leading change in counselling services to manage people and oversee recovery programs for adults, youth and families. He is experienced in critically analyzing current mental healthcare policies and practice theories and the models of service delivery in public and private healthcare systems.

    Steve’s interests and strengths include crisis intervention, mediation, conflict resolution, addiction and concurrent disorder counselling, relapse prevention, and working with couples, people from diverse backgrounds, and families. Steve acknowledges the importance of aftercare and he prides himself on building sustainable relationships with community partners.

  • Dr Nick Withers

    Emergency Medicine Physician

    Dr Nick Withers is an emergency medicine physician with more than twenty years experience in rural and urban emergency departments across Canada. Nick is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of BC, and he teaches and practices on Vancouver Island.

    Nick is a decorated 22-year veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces and enjoyed a distinguished international military career. He was the Senior Medical Authority at Canada’s elite special forces unit Joint Task Force and the Command Surgeon for Canadian Special Operations Forces Command. As a Lieutenant-Colonel Nick retired from his military career in 2015, and he continues to provide emergency medical advice to the Royal Canadian Navy.

    Nick was the Honorary Canadian Physician to Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for her Royal Tour in 2010. He has also accompanied Prime Ministers Jean Chretien and Paul Martin on Government visits to foreign nations.

    When not in the office, he can be found spending time with his wife and three children or on the golf course or ice hockey rink.

    Dr. Browning is a distinguished physician whose medical journey began in 2005 in South Africa. His early career was marked by significant roles at prestigious institutions, including Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital, Groote Schuur Hospital and the Kyalitsha Trauma Unit, as well as positions in various Emergency Rooms and General Practices. Seeking broader horizons, Dr. Browning ventured to serve as a Ship Physician on the Disney Cruise Line for two years, an experience that enriched his medical expertise and global perspective.

    In 2013, Dr. Browning relocated to Vancouver, Canada, where he practiced family medicine before dedicating himself to the field of addiction medicine in 2017. His commitment to addiction recovery has seen him work closely with both inpatient and outpatient services, earning him recognition as a compassionate and innovative practitioner in Vancouver's medical community. November 2023 marked a significant milestone in Dr. Browning's career as he joined the medical team at Cedars at Cobble Hill, where he continues to provide care to individuals on their recovery journey.

    Dr. Browning's approach to healing extends beyond traditional medicine, influenced by a transformative trip to the Peruvian Rainforest led by Gabor Mate. This experience has broadened his spiritual perspective, incorporating non-traditional modalities into his practice. Currently, Dr. Browning is expanding his expertise to include anti-aging medicine and hormone optimization, furthering his commitment to holistic well-being.

    Outside the medical field, Dr. Browning is a singer/songwriter, showcasing his talents at significant events, including performing the national anthems of the USA and Canada at BC Place for the Vancouver Canucks in 2023.

    He lives in Shawnigan Lake with his partner and their two adorable ragdoll cats, Cupid and BartholoMew.

    Dr. Browning's multifaceted expertise and holistic approach to addiction medicine make him a vital asset to our team, offering our clients a path to recovery that is both comprehensive and empathetic.

    Over the span of her career, Tamar has worked with a wide array of adult clients presenting with varying degrees of clinical conditions across a diverse range of settings (hospitals, outpatient clinics, inpatient treatment centers, non-profit agencies, EAP corporations, and private practice settings). She has also worked in private in-patient and government-paid outpatient addiction treatment centers.

    Tamar has trained in the field of trauma extensively, as many clients presenting with addiction-based issues often have a history of trauma, PTSD, and C-PTSD. She has been fortunate to have trained with some of the world's best experts in the field and is committed to providing the highest level of quality care out there to each of her clients.

    She is continually training and learning new modalities of therapy to expand her ever-growing skill-set, in order to provide clients with the best possible treatment that is holistic in nature.

    Nikita is the founder of I AM RESILIENT.™, a movement created to promote well-being and resilience. She graduated as a strong healthcare professional from the University of Victoria with Honours, and is highly skilled in Yoga instructing, Health Promotion Education, Patient Safety, and Leadership.

    Madison holds a BSc with a major in Psychology from the University of Victoria and is board certified as a neurofeedback technician with the Biofeedback Certification International Alliance (BCIA). She has extensive training and experience in the biofeedback modalities of neurofeedback (EEG), neurostimulation and heart rate variability (HRV) and has experience working with individuals with a range of diagnoses including ADHD, PTSD, anxiety, depression, addiction, complex trauma, and traumatic brain injury. Madison has completed specialized Repetitive Transcranial Magentic Stimulation (rTMS) training at Harvard University’s Berenson-Allen Center for Noninvasive Brain Stimulation, and currently offers rTMS treatment for mental health and improving cognition.

    Madison's deep understanding of mental health and passion for improving lives allows her to utilize evidence-based science in a truly caring and empathetic manner.

    Valarie has been specializing in the treatment of substance use disorders for over twenty years. As a dedicated CCAPP Licensed Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counsellor she is an inspirational "change agent" who fosters positive personal growth in others. She believes in guiding and empowering individuals to help themselves manage long-term changes to a healthy lifestyle.

    Valarie has held multiple management roles and provided both the private sector and the Department of Defence, Education and Correctional Services with a range of supervision and support services for alcohol and drug treatment facilities and outreach services. She has provided substance use disorder services for active military personnel at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego and the Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton. She previously worked at Orange County Juvenile Hall, where she developed program curricula and facilitated psycho-educational group programs. She was the recipient of the 2008 Orange County Probation Department Chief’s Award for her role in creating the Progressive Rehabilitation In a Diverse Environment (PRIDE) Program.

    Valarie has received training and Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) certification from the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation. She has multiple additional credentials including those from the International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC).

    When not at work Valarie enjoys hiking, rock climbing, creative furniture restoration, traveling nationally or internationally and learning about other cultures.

As a corporate coach, she has worked with The Greenbrier Resort, The BOC Group, YWCA, The Los Angeles City Controller/Auditing Staff, studio executives, casting companies, lighting companies, manufacturers, and more.

    Incorporating a background in both visual and performing arts, Mary utilizes creative principals, hypnosis, and life coaching to support clients in achieving their dreams. Clients create the habits, goals and lives that they want and enjoy the process as well as the results. Mary’s approach aims to get the ‘habit brain’ and ‘creative brain’ in agreement. She believes that when someone stops fighting with themselves there is less resistance, and that change will happen in a graceful manner.

Throughout his own athletic career, Matt faced his own repetitive injuries, where he refined his approach to treatment based on direct personal experience.

    Marianne is a biologist and tour guide with a passion for nature and the outdoors. Marianne grew up in Wales and spent as much time as possible outdoors. Her love of nature evolved into a career in conservation and the chance to work with amazing teams on environmental projects around the world.

    Since moving to Vancouver Island eight years ago, Marianne has provided private tours around Victoria, with a focus on nature and community. She fully appreciates the benefits of connecting with nature for mental health and wellbeing and enjoys helping clients safely explore the region’s stunning natural areas.

    Alexandra has competed at the elite level in amateur boxing becoming 2x Provincial Champion, 2x Western Canadian Champion, Silver medalist at the Canadian National Championships and competed at the Olympic trials in Montreal. She was also awarded “Best Elite Female Boxer” in 2014 at the Provincial Championships.

    In 2016, she decided to hang up her gloves and pursue her dream of opening her own boxing gym. Bringing this dream into fruition has allowed Alexandra to carry on her passion for the sport, as well as offer a safe place for anyone to come and get away from outside stressors. In her experience, there is healing in boxing. The mental and physical skills learned can help alleviate stress, anxiety, depression and improve overall mental health.

    Alexandra is currently enrolled at Camosun College in their Kinesiology program, with the goal of continuing to expand her knowledge, to better assist her clients in all aspects of their health and wellness journey.

    Stephanie is a fully Certified STOTT* Pilates teacher with 20 years experience as a touring professional dancer, violinist and movement teacher.  She trained in Ballet under the Royal Academy of Dance in Ottawa and has a background in Jazz and Tap (ADAPT).  After a minor injury 15 years ago, Stephanie discovered STOTT* Pilates. Stephanie trains a wide variety of people from pro golfers and marathoners to people coming back into shape after injuries. Training is taught on the Merrithew V2Max Reformer. 

    "It helped me so much with my recovery and continues to be an integral part of my overall conditioning and mental health. I decided to become a teacher because I’m so passionate about sharing the gifts it has given me.  Pilates and the use of proper breathwork is a gentle conditioning that allows people from all age groups to keep doing the things they love and enjoy the body they live in.”

    David is the co-founder of The Sanctuary World and The Sanctuary Vancouver Island. He is a Strategic Director with a remit to maintain the highest standard of ethics and quality and oversee the non-clinical aspects of our luxury healthcare delivery businesses.

    David and his wife have seven adult children and seven grandchildren, and have lived in Canada for 25 years, in Montreal, Quebec, Niagara-On-The-Lake, Ontario & Victoria, BC. They have also lived in Australia, the UAE and Spain. David’s interests outside of international business include travel, cinema, theatre, film production & crime-writing. He’s an ardent England Cricket supporter and author of the ‘Oscar Phelps’ series of novels.

    Dr Walsh commenced his career in intensive care medicine. In 2010 he switched focus to community medicine and worked as a Senior Medical Officer for The Sanctuary Byron Bay until he took over the company in 2017. He co-founded The Sanctuary World in 2021 with the view to ensure that all of our clients have timely and accessible care, regardless of their cultural background or geographical location.

    Dr Walsh lives with his wife and three children on a certified organic avocado farm and enjoys maintaining a healthy lifestyle by surfing every sunrise, reading hardcopy books, and listening to a wide variety of music.

    Nan is an accomplished Barrister & Solicitor. She grew up in the town of Sparwood, in the East Kootenays and is proud to call British Columbia home. Nan is fluent in both English and Punjabi. After obtaining her Criminology Diploma from Mount Royal College and a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Carelton University, Nan returned to B.C. to obtain her law degree from the University of Victoria. Nan completed her articles with the B.C. Ministry of Attorney General and began practicing after receiving her call to the bar in 2000.

    Through her years of practice, Nan gained experience in various areas of law. She spent time in court as a federal crown counsel and subsequently in private practice working predominantly on litigation matters. Nan has appeared in various levels of court and administrative tribunals. She has also gained experience working on investigations on contract with the B.C. Human Rights Commission (as it was known at the time).

    Nan’s diverse experience provides her with the ability to provide a balanced opinion and work with in a productive and well-rounded manner.

    Outside the office, Nan volunteers her time generously with local non-profit organizations and various sports clubs for her children. She is a proud hockey and ball-hockey mom.
